Not Me This Time

Flame azalea - a burning bush?

Sunday the choir sang Praise to the Lord the Almighty

raised the roof!

worship ran long because pastor is on paternity leave

div student free to pontificate

guest elder presided at communion

Sunday school hour only had 35 minutes

I wandered around

because the class I’ve been attending

didn’t meet

teacher is elderly sick usually gone

although she wants desperately to be there.

First couple Sundays I attended

someone else led the class

then both subs asked for volunteer to lead

the next Sunday

well okay I’ll do it I said

yay thank you they replied

then the teacher was back for a week

I liked her a lot

week later she was ill could I fill in again

continue lesson of Mary and Martha

yes but the problem is

you’re not giving me but a day’s notice

that’s all we’re getting the other two subs said

she doesn’t call in sick until Friday

this has been going on for months.

When I got the email last Friday I said no

I just got the Covid shot feel lousy

so there was no class.

Teacher recovering at daughter's home

sent me email telling me next topic would be

Learning the Will of God

that’s a hard subject I responded

we could spend lifetime learning God's will

just by following teachings of Jesus

(not what she meant as I knew)

I said it might be better to alternate subs

with perhaps parables of Jesus

we’d pick our favs prepare in advance

be ready if we need to fill in

(I'm not going to teach this class as I've said)

She responded

no it will be Learning the Will of God

(perhaps we can incorporate parables)

it’s what the class wants she said

a group I’m told won’t even agree

to read a bible study book

ah shades of Tacoma I thought

meaning and purpose

(not to mention control) derived

from something that is being taken away

not by me this time

I wished her blessings

it's not a topic I feel comfortable teaching

told other unhappy subs

sometimes things need to die

before new life can emerge

it’s the Christian story

I didn’t say.
